In short
Using Know Your Buy
- You may download and use Know Your Buy free of charge for checking laptops.
- Only run Know Your Buy on a laptop when its owner has agreed. The owner must approve administrator access when Windows asks.
- Don't modify, resell or redistribute Know Your Buy, or pass off a changed copy as Know Your Buy. Share the link to this site instead.
What the results mean
- Know Your Buy gives an automated health check. It is not a replacement for professional inspection.
- Results depend on what the laptop reports. Some laptops report incorrect values, and some counters can be reset. Each result shows a confidence level for this reason.
- Repair cost figures are rough estimates. Prices vary by model, shop and city.
- Know Your Buy doesn't yet test the screen, keyboard, speakers, webcam, ports or wireless. Check those yourself, as described in the buyer's guide.
- The decision to buy, and at what price, is yours.
Load tests
Know Your Buy runs the processor, graphics and memory at full load for a few minutes and writes a test file of at most 1 GB to measure drive speed. This is designed to be safe for working laptops. A laptop with an existing fault may show that fault, or shut down, under load, which is what the test is for.
No warranty
Know Your Buy is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any loss arising from using Know Your Buy or relying on its results, including the price paid for a laptop.
Third-party components
Know Your Buy includes open-source components under their own licences, including LibreHardwareMonitor (MPL 2.0) and QuestPDF. The optional PawnIO driver is a separate program from its own publisher and is only installed with your consent.
